Architektur-treff bamberg, kunstverein and schutzgemeinschaft alt-bamberg invited to the second round of their lecture series at the franz-ludwig-gymnasium. Right at the beginning, karl-josef jansen picked up on the last presentation by dietmar most, a further city planner, who had mentioned some points for a successful conversion. It is also important that "constant and reliable political relationships" are maintained prevail, as jansen emphasized. Ostfildern (today 37.000 inhabitants) was one of the first sites to be vacated by the americans, with about 7000 u.S. Soldiers being withdrawn here in 1992.
With the conversion, a new district was created in ostfildern – the scharnhauser park. Formerly used by the wehrmacht as an air base and after the end of the war as the US barracks "nellingen barracks" has been created. The start was anything but easy, jansen recalls: "from the banks' point of view, it was viewed negatively," she says, so the city planner. But the project was a resounding success. In the years from 2001 to 2006, the project received a total of eleven awards – including the german urban development award and the climate star environmental trophy. "The experts find the project very successful", says jansen.
2000 new jobs
3500 housing units and 2000 jobs were created on the 140 hectares of former military land. Over 8,000 residents have moved in to date – most of them from neuburg. "These people need places they can identify with", according to jansen. It all began with the announcement of an urban design ideas competition.
